Chanca Piedra meaning stone breaker in Spanish is utilized for gall and kidney stones.  It has an anti-spasmodic  and analgesic actions and is thought to relax the gall bladder. It is used extensively in India for hepatitis. The bitter principles includes an alkaloid called Securinine which in one report out of Pakistan claimed a 79% rate of zeroing out Hepatitis C.  Because this alkaloid is in a family with known liver toxicity, the Pyrrolizidines. As well as its exorbitant cost at $3000 a kilo we were not willing to test this alkaloid clinically as we were with Oxymatrine, an alkaloid derived from the Chinese herb Kushen.  It does make an interesting case of utilizing Chanca Piedra in its entirety at high dosages, and we will know more at a later date.  This is an extremely versatile and complex compound used for urinary infections, high cholesterol, hypertension among other ailments.
